How much can I get? This is the first thing people want to know, so I've left it to last, just to mess with you. It's like putting the milk in the back of a supermarket.
If you're in the big leagues, you get what you can negotiate. But for the rest of us, publishers have pre-set rates of what they'll pay. So there's not much negotiation and your complaints of being under-compensated will fall on deaf ears. But you avoid haggling and there's comfort in knowing that you're being paid the same as other photographers. The book Pricing Photography is full of charts and rates for every type of photograph sale (although the rates are somewhat optimistic).
Here are some typical rates:
| Application | Typical Rate |
| Web photo | $10 - $50 |
| Postcard photo | $50 - $100 |
| Magazine photo | $50 - $500 |
| Magazine article | $1 per word |
| Book (entire book) | $10k-$15k |
| Advertising photo | $5k - $25k |
| Product | 1¢ - $1 |
Seeing your photo professionally reproduced | Priceless |
