I requested photos permissions for use in our new Web Site to some US Departments (like EPA) and building materials manufacturers (like Andersen, Fypon, etc.)
Some of them have get the permission. But others don’t answer to me. What can I do in these cases?
Thank you

US DEPARTMENTS
Hi Toni:
Photos by the U.S. Government are free to use without permission (they are “in the public domain”) as U.S. copyright law specifically excludes such work.
“Copyright protection under this title is not available for any work of the United States Government...”
17 USC 105
So for general photos created by the EPA or other US departments, you do not need to get permission.
Photos taken by corporations (such as Andersen, Frypon, etc.) do have copyright. However, you might not need permission if the photos are general marketing product shots and your use is fair, since marketing shots are generally provided for the purpose of showing and advertising those products.
If the company photos are not marketing materials, and your use is not fair use, then you should not use the photos if you are unable to get permission to do so.
For specific advice, consult a lawyer.
Best wishes,
Andrew
