Larger sensor, larger aperture, faster processor, dual flash, and improved software combine to make the world’s most popular camera even better.

The Apple iPhone 5S introduced today retains the same 8 MP resolution as the iPhone 5, but has many improvements significant to photographers:

  • 15% larger sensor
  • Larger ƒ/2.2 aperture
  • Those two combined mean 33% increase in light collected by sensor
  • 64-bit processor
  • True Tone flash (two LED flashes for varied color temperature)
  • Improved backside illumination sensor
  • Faster focusing (probably due to the faster processor)
  • Faster burst mode of 10fps
  • Instagram-like 1:1 format with built-in filters
  • Matrix metering
  • Auto-image stabilization
  • OpenGL ES 3.0 for visual effects
