PhotoSecrets 100 updated with ownership info

By Andrew Hudson Published: August 11, 2014 Updated: February 10, 2016

Now you can see who owns — and who started — the most popular photography-related websites. The PhotoSecrets 100 has been updated with information on ownership, founders, and location.

Here are some interesting things I learned while updating the list:

  • The microstock jostling continues. Fotolia (#7) has overtaken 123RF (#8), and both are battling iStock (#6) and Dreamstime (#9) for second place after Shutterstock (#4).
  • Two online photo editors are closing in on the Top 10 — PIXLR (#11) and PicMonkey (#12). Six more are in the Top 100: PiZap (#47), PicResize (#48), Lunapic (#56), Pho.to (#57), iPiccy (#73), PhotoFaceFun (#89).
  • A plethora of free photos sites (well, 12) are in the Top 100: Freepik (#13), Pixabay (#20), FreeImages (#23), FreeDigitalPhotos (#35), MorgueFile (#46), Imgsrc.ru (#49), Unsplash (#52), StockFreeImages (#62), StockVault (#75), Pixoto (#83), EveryStockPhoto (#96) and FreeRange (#99).
  • GoPro (#33) is the most popular camera manufacturer, above Canon (#34) and NikonUSA (#64).
  • CanonRumors (#74) has overtaken NikonRumors (#78).
  • Nikon reviewer KenRockwell (#56) is more popular than NikonUSA (#64) and Nikon (#81).
  • DPReview (#21) is the most popular online photography magazine. Another 13 are more popular than the US’ most popular print photography magazine. PetaPixel (#39), DPS (#41), Photo.net (#54), KenRockwell (#58),CameraWorld (#61), Photoshop.com (#65), CanonRumors (#74), PhotographyBlog (#76), NikonRumors (#78), ImagingResource (#79), ePhotozine (#81), TalkPhotography (#85), SLRLounge (#86), are all above Popular Photography (#91).

Here are the Top Ten Photography Websites as of August 11, 2014.
