Half Dome and the Merced River in Summer Yosemite Valley was formed by the Merced River (which at one time formed a glacier). In Dec 1996/Jan 1997, unusually high rainfall caused a devasting flood which washed away many campgrounds and access roads. Overnight accomodation was reduced but all the main features were unaffected and the disaster-relief funds should help to improve tourist traffic.
