Downieville in the rain

In 1848, Gold was discovered in streams flowing off California's Sierra Nevada mountains. In the next four years the new state's population swelled from 13,000 to 100,000 (the '49-ers') and over 550 mining towns sprung up. About half those towns remain today, linked by the appropriately-named Route 49.

Downieville is a typical one-street mining town at the north end of the chain. An overcast day and light rain brings out the foliage and creates reflections off the damp road.
Downieville.
