Lost your camera? Now you can get it back, if photos from it appear online, as the camera’s serial number might be embedded in the photos.

Photographer John Heller was working in Hollywood when his Nikon D3 camera and lenses, worth $9,000, were stolen. So he searched the Internet for photos that included his camera’s serial number, using the online service cameratrace.com (Update: This site no longer works). Sure enough, photos from his camera were posted on Flickr, and linked to a Facebook account. The LAPD tracked down the user who had innocently bought the camera from the presumed thief, and John regained all his stolen equipment.

A similar service is stolencamerafinder.com.
