Amazon Kindle Fire HD 8.9

An iPad rival with potential staying-power has been introduced. The “Amazon Kindle Fire HD 8.9",” despite its cumbersome name, has good photography-display specs, with a 1920 × 1200 color screen.
This second generation tablet improves on the first gen’s weak screen, which could only display 600 pixels of a 1024-pixel web page when in vertical format. Beside the “HD Display”, the new Fire adds Dolby audio and dual-band dual-antenna Wi-Fi.
The Fire was announced on September 6, 2012 along with a family of Kindles, which includes:
- Kindle Fire HD: a 7" (1280 × 800 resolution) screen version, similar in size to the first generation Fire
- Kindle Paperwhite: an improved e-reader with higher contrast, higher resolution, and a built-in light. My wife will be getting one of those for Christmas.
